Water Hand Pumps Update for Lady Fatemah Trust - 9,483 men, women and children benefit from safe and clean water – 10 Hand Pumps installed
2010-01-02
Afghanistan is a land-locked and mountainous country with extreme weathers of very cold winters and very hot summers. Although the country suffers from severe droughts, agriculture is the main industry in Afghanistan with approximately 80% of the population depending on agriculture for their livelihood. Numerous conflicts, droughts, avalanches and deforestation have led to the degradation of the land and have greatly reduced the size of arable land in the country to about 12% from which only a half is being cultivated mainly a result of a lack of usable water supply. With little rainfall, the farmers usually rely on the melting snow which gathers during the winter months to replenish the ground water, for their irrigation and domestic needs. However over the last seven years there has not been sufficient snow fall and coupled with little rainfall has resulted in severe shortage of water for farming and domestic use.

29th Microfinance Project success story – Securing a Family’s future in Nabatieh, South Lebanon
2009-11-30
Project Achievements and Realized Progress. Case Background. When Ali Mohammad Shoueib found a steady job as assistant school bus driver with one of Lebanon’s many private schools soon after his marriage 22 years ago, he considered himself a fortunate man, because this job, although moderately paid, had two big advantages: The school’s employees were all covered by health insurance, and the school offered their employees greatly reduced school fees for their children. Ali himself had only been able to study to 7th grade due to financial constraints. He would have loved to complete his education himself and most certainly wanted his children to be well-educated individuals who would be able to render significant services to their community and country. Unfortunately, public schools in Lebanon are neglected and underfunded and a good school education can only be obtained by studying at a private school.

Losing one’s father early in life is one of the most traumatizing experiences a child can face. For those of us who have grown up with both parents it is difficult to imagine the feelings of pain, loneliness and deprivation an orphan experiences. In poor and not fully developed countries, this situation is aggravated by economic problems, lack of social support systems and the male-centeredness of many developing societies that impairs the capability of women to provide for their families.

Situated on the banks of the Tigris river about 320 kilometres south-east of Baghdad and a mere 50 kilometres from the Iraqi-Iranian border, Emara has been known for its affluence and beautiful architecture for centuries. Today, however, Meisan province and its capital Emara belong to the poorest parts of the country due to Saddam’s oppressive regime and his neglect of provinces with a Shia majority. Appeal for Fifth Micro-Financing Support Project “Purchase of an Operational Workshop and adding Additional Equipment”
2009-08-31
Economic recession and spiral rise in cost of living has devastatingly effected the lives of most of the low income group families. The large family structure, joint family system, and even more than one earning member in a family have left them in turmoil and agony. Young talented youth with technical background and skill in hand, do not have enough resources even from there jobs to support a reasonable living, for themselves and their dependents. There is a strong need to support such youngsters who have drive, talent, skill and lack just a meagre financial need, which if provided can help make them self employed and independent, thereby enabling them to become self sufficient and self sustaining, besides releasing the economic burden of a member of the society.

Orphan, support and permanent assistance report from Iran for the first half of 2009
2009-08-31
Most of us look back on our childhood with a nostalgic longing for a better, more secure and more peaceful life. However, not all children are blessed with a happy childhood. In a world ravaged by war as well as disease, many children have to go through the perhaps most painful childhood experience: The loss of one or both of their parents. In the first six months of 2009, 168 orphans (e.g. children who have lost at least one parent, in most cases the father) have received assistance under IRAC’s orphan sponsorship and orphan support programs. The orphan sponsorship program assists orphans under the age of 15 years. While school attendance is encouraged and monitored, it is not a condition for receiving assistance. In the orphan support program, orphans over 15 years of age a sponsored with the condition that they attend school, university or skills training or work as an apprentice to learn a trade. Attendance is closely monitored. A further 40 needy persons, most of them children living in conditions closely resembling orphan hood, received monthly assistance under the permanent assistance program.

Appeal on behalf of 129 handicapped children from war-torn Lebanon to make them self-reliant - £ 4.85 per session per child!!
2009-07-28
Allah entrusted our children to us so that we may nourish and nurture their bodies and minds until they reach their full potential. As all those of us who are fathers and mothers know, this can be difficult enough with a normal, healthy child. How much more difficult is it with a child that is afflicted with a handicap or disability! How much pain to bear for a mother and father who have to witness the sufferings of their children? If the situation is aggravated by poverty, it can be overwhelming.

1,330 Needy Iraqi Refugee Families (6,650 persons) Ask for Your Help
2009-07-04
As the holy month of Ramadhan draws closer, Iraqi refugee families in Iran look forward to fasting for the sake of Allah. However, at the same time family fathers and mothers are concerned how they will put nutritious food on the table each night for Eftar so that all family members have the strength to enjoy the full spiritual benefit of fasting. Many Iraqi refugee families live on the margins of society. Most can only work at menial, low-paid jobs. Families that have lost their male breadwinners and are headed by women have even more difficulties to make ends meet. Many families are not able to eat balanced diets. Especially children, pregnant and lactating women and the elderly are at risk of malnutrition. Only Allah knows how many mo’mins worry in their hearts whether they and their families will be able to serve Allah by fasting during the holy month.

Appeal for Assisting Widows and Orphans in Yawkawlang, Afghanistan SECOND PHASE
2009-02-21
Afghanistan has been ravaged by war, internal strife and foreign occupation for more than thirty years. In addition, the country has suffered from drought for more than ten consecutive years. Afghanistan derives a great part of its national income from agriculture, but due to the drought crops fail because farmers cannot irrigate their fields and do not have enough water for their livestock. In the town of Yawkawlang, close to the provincial capital of Bamiyan in eastern Afghanistan, the situation is aggravated by another factor: In 1998 and the following years, due to its mainly Shiite population, Yawkawlang was subject to vicious attacks by the Taliban. Almost all men between the age of 17 and 70 were rounded up and killed. Out of a population of then 14,000, about 8,000 lives were lost. Young and old women alike have since been left to fend for themselves and to care for their orphaned children.

Micro Finance for 20 Widows with 161 orphans in Jaghoori, Afghanistan
2008-11-19
Jaghoori Area Jaghoori is one of the districts of the Ghazni province in Afghanistan. This area is mountainous and like most of Afghanistan suffers from drought. It is also said to be the most populous district in Afghanistan. The inhabitants are keen on education as is evident from the report, where widows still try to give their children an education despite their financial situation. Jaghoori’s economy is based on agriculture; growing wheat, nuts and fruits as well as rearing sheep, cattle and goats. This has reduced considerably in the past few years due to severe drought as it difficult both to irrigate their crops and to graze their livestock.

210 Iraqi and Afghan Refugee Orphan Children Programme Jointly run by LFT and IRAC in Iran
2008-10-21
Refugee children are orphaned more often than children who live in their own country, and the future of an orphaned refugee child is more at risk than that of an orphan who lives in his / her own country. Orphaned refugee children do not have extended family to rely upon for material and emotional report. The only person who can support them is their mother, and widowed refugee women are at a great disadvantage when it comes to providing for their families.

Other women were widowed when their husbands were executed, or ‘disappeared’, under Saddam’s long regime. Untold thousands of women have become widows during the harsh sanctions imposed on the people of Iraq or as a result of sectarian violence in Iraq over the past few years.

The number of orphans and widows rises on a daily basis.

Appeal for Assistance from Husseiniya Amir al-Mo’mineen in Dowlat-Abad, Tehran
2008-06-18
Husseiniyas are comparable with Islamic community centers. They normally are used for performing ceremonies on religious holidays and holding services for the deceased. However, Husseiniya Amir al-Mo’mineen, which is located in the Dowlat-Abad region south of Tehran, has assumed a different responsibility for several years now. It offers free accommodation to Iraqi patients coming to Iran for treatment. Men and women can sleep in separate facilities. The Husseiniya provides blankets, toilet services and bathing facilities. While conditions are obviously basic, the head of the Husseiniya does his best to provide services that are suitable for patients and their accompanying persons.

LFT receives Appeal to Support 103 Orphans Under 15 Years and 102 Orphans and Needy Young Persons Over 15 Years
2008-06-01
Under this program, orphans are sponsored without any condition in an attempt to replace a small part of the care their father would have provided. However, IRAC realizes that the most important capital an orphan can be given is a sound education. Therefore, the orphans benefiting from this program are encouraged to attend school whenever this is possible, and IRAC’s staff members try to solve problems that prevent an orphan from attending school. Of 103 orphans, 22 are less than six years old. Of the other 81 orphans, 63 orphans (78 per cent) attend school and one orphan attends literacy classes. Five orphans suffer from mental or physical handicaps that make it impossible for them to attend school. Twelve orphans do not attend school due to reasons IRAC is unable to influence, mostly problems with their refugee documents. Many families told IRAC’s staff that IRAC’s sponsorship makes it possible for their children to continue their education.

In our increasingly complicated world, the perhaps most vulnerable group are young persons aged fifteen to early twenties. During these crucial years, children who lost their father, and children whose father cannot provide adequately for them, are in need of support.

Dear LFT donors: Your sponsorship makes it possible for these children to continue to attend school despite all hardships. Many of them show great eagerness to study and are among the top students in their forms. It does not cost much to support an orphan in Iraq. GBP 15.00 (USD 30.00) per month will provide for basic food and clothing. Your sponsorship will prevent that an orphan gives up his / her education in order to work in menial jobs. Your sponsorship will provide an orphan with the means to acquire knowledge and skills that will ensure that he / she will grow up to be an educated and useful member of society.

Sixty orphans have been sponsored since 2005 while forty-two new orphans were added in July 2007. The table below shows the composition of this group according to gender and age:

Appeal from 30 more Orphans from Basrah, Iraq asking for assistance from LFT donors. 20 families live in Illegally constructed houses
2007-09-24
The number of orphans in Iraq rises every day. Fathers die in terrorist attacks or succumb to illnesses due to lack of treatment. LFT’s representative in Basrah introduced thirty new orphans from that city for sponsorship beginning in July 2007. Fourteen boys and sixteen girls hope for a better future with assistance from you, LFT’s generous donors.

80 Iraqi orphans living as refugees in Ahwaz, Iran are asking for assistance from LFT’s donors. (FIRST Phase)

The rate of orphaned children among Iraqi refugees living in Iran is high. Persecution by Saddam’s regime as well as the rigors of refugee life caused the premature death of many fathers, who left behind wives and small children.

Appeal from 69 more families from Kerbala under Orphans Sponsorship Project bring the total no of Orphans sponsored to 139 out of 756 Orphans in total. 20 families live in houses unfit for human accommodation, houses that are partly or wholly constructed from reed and palm leaves.
2007-08-21
The “Remarks” section of the table gives a vivid picture of the sufferings of these children. Of the 139 families on this list, 44 live in shelters built on government land without official authorization, 33 live with relatives and a further 30 families live in rented housing, spending almost all their permanent income on rent. 20 families live in houses unfit for human accommodation, houses that are partly or wholly constructed from reed and palm leaves. Despite these circumstances, a majority of the children who are of school age manage to continue their education. Despite the lack of furniture, air conditioning, electricity and even proper clothing and stationery, not to mention the lack of food and medical care, these children continue to study, and to hope and work for a better future. A mere 15.00 GBP per month per Orphan can help them to realize this hope.

Twenty Iraqi Orphans Apply for Your Assistance - Orphans being sponsored in Basra brings the total to 110 in 2007
2007-06-28
Iraq is the country of orphans. There are no statistics even estimating how many children lost their fathers to the brutal oppression of Saddam’s dictatorship. Neither is there any information on the number of children who lost their fathers due to the sectarian and criminal violence engulfing the country since Saddam’s downfall. Iraqi society is also an extremely family-centred society, and especially in its more conservative strata traditional gender roles are still firmly in place. Even grown-up unmarried women look to male family members, especially their fathers, for support. It remains difficult for most Iraqi women to support themselves and their families on their own.

It only costs 50 pence per day, ladies and gentlemen, to sponsor an orphan
2007-05-30
No amount of financial assistance will ever be able to replace any father’s loving care and eradicate from the minds of these children those dreadful minutes when their fathers lost their lives, in some cases in front of their own eyes. However, with a mere GBP 15 (USD 30.00) per month, you can at least ease their poverty and enable them to rebuild their lives and make a fresh beginning, as well as gain blessings for yourself.

A Chicken per Family Project for Iraqi and Afghan Refugees in Iran
2007-02-26
Proper nutrition is essential for the physical and psychological wellbeing of children and grown-ups alike. This is true for healthy individuals, but becomes even more essential for those suffering from chronic diseases. Families with low income are frequently forced to economize on the food-budget to satisfy other needs, while chronically ill patients do not eat properly in order to be able to purchase their medications. Because meat and chicken are expensive, protein intake is frequently very low. Programs aimed at improving the nutrition of poor families and needy chronically ill patients should provide food items, not cash.

Emergency Appeal - Assistance to Internally Displaced Families in and around Basra – Iraq
2007-02-13
Sectarian strife and terrorism has led to human displacements on an unprecedented scale in Iraq. According to the website ReliefWeb (http://www.reliefweb.int/rw/dbc.nsf/doc100?OpenForm), about 200,000 persons had to leave their homes after they were threatened or attacked for belonging to the Shia faith. Numbers are rising. The number of internally displaced families in and around the southern city of Basra was 3,325 families (about 20,000 persons) as of 31 January 2007 according to the Iraqi authorities and is rising steadily.

Orphan Sponsorship Program Najaf al-Ashraf
2007-01-06
One of the most traumatizing events in the life of a child is the death of a parent. When an Iraqi child loses his/her father, in most cases the psychological trauma is compounded by serious and debilitating financial problems. Since 2005, LFT’s donors are sponsoring a number of orphans in the holy city of Najaf al-Ashraf. In 2006, sixty orphaned families received monthly sponsorships amounting to 25,000 Dinar per orphan. A short glance at the database reveals that no less than forty percent of the children were orphaned due to violence. Fathers were executed by Saddam’s regime, shot by terrorists or robbers, killed by American bombing or died in car explosions. How painful to think that these fathers would still be with their children, were it not for dictatorship and war.

Sultaniyah feeding program for the months of June to December 2006
2007-01-01
With only 27 residents, Sultaniyah camp is extremely small. Apart from the beneficiaries, the camp accommodates three families comprising sixteen persons. Unfortunately, WFP stopped food aid to refugee camps in Iran. Therefore, all inhabitants of the camp are now in a difficult situation, as their income is not enough to purchase sufficient food items. Other, bigger camps located closer to main overland routes receive assistance from other charities, but Sultaniyeh is located too far-off to attract charitable activities.

Khaz’ali School for the Blind, Iran

The school is located in downtown Tehran and has 101 students aged five to eighteen years. All students are boys. All 101 students come from families in difficult financial circumstances. Many are so needy that the school regularly asks for food donations from charitable individuals and distributes the items to the families.

Appeal to Provide Wheelchairs to Fifty Disabled Iraqi Men and Women
2006-12-05
The Iraqi city of Karbala has a long history of suffering. As a center of Islamic religious learning, it was known for its opposition to Saddam’s rule. Consequently, it suffered from complete neglect of all its facilities during his era. Especially in the health sector the lack of facilities, medicines and public health programmes meant that many people suffered permanent damage to their health and became disabled.

Appeal for Funding for Distribution of 3500 Blankets to 500 Internally Displaced Families in Karbala – Iraq
2006-12-01
Today, many Iraqis are threatened at their places of residence because they belong to a certain religious or ethnic group. Conservative estimates talk of 2,000 thus persecuted families taking refuge in the city of Karbala. In order not to attract attention when fleeing, they were forced to escape with nothing but the clothes they wore. With the little funds they were able to bring with them, they rented the cheapest accommodation available. Many houses do not have proper doors and lack windowpanes. Most families had no funds left to buy even the most basic household equipment. All of them hoped that they would be able to return to their homes before the onset of winter, but the security situation deteriorated even further and they are forced to stay where they are.

Sponsoring 50 orphans in Basra, South Iraq from December 2006 to June 2007
2006-11-22
The southern Iraqi city of Basrah was regarded as a stronghold of opposition to Saddam’s brutal reign and bore a lot of persecution of its inhabitants and neglect of basic facilities. During the American intervention of Iraq, Basrah was one of the main scenes of fighting. As it is close to the Kuwaiti border, over which coalition forces entered the country, Saddam concentrated his army there and a lot of fighting took place in and around Basrah.

Sponsorship of 121 orphaned Iraqi refugee children from October to December 2006
2006-11-15
Being a refugee implies being not at home and being different, often marginalized. Even refugee children who were born in the country their families fled to never feel really at home there. Being an orphan means lacking the support, loving care and guidance of a father that children desperately need and take for granted.

Aged, childless widows need your assistance!
2006-10-26
In communities where the traditional partition of roles and occupations is still in place, where women are still mainly taking care of the house and men are the breadwinners, where it is unusual and sometimes frowned upon for a woman to engage in gainful employment of any kind … one can imagine how hard the lives of widowed women are. Most of them rely upon their sons for sustenance, but what happens if they are childless or their sons are unable to care for them?

The main problem in Karbala is sanitation. Proper sanitation is only available in a small region around the Shrines in the old city of Karbala, and the sanitation problems are thus shared by most neighbourhoods. Except in the region around the Shrines, there are no sewage pipes. Those who have the means buy a sanitation tank, which has to be emptied out when it fills up. Many families do not have the means, and sewage is simply released into the street.

2006-05-30
Micro Finance – The Results How much does it cost to change the life of one family forever? It’s actually as little as £ 50.00. Why? Because that’s how much one Pedal Usha sewing machine costs. Charitable Trust has enabled 10 poor and deserving families to become self sufficient and able to earn their own livelihoods as desired.

Final Report: Purchase and Distribution of Two Milk cows for Two Saddat Families Project
2006-05-25
Summary This project was funded by The Lady Fatemah (a.s.) Charitable Trust who raised £1,000 (US$ 1,750) for the purchase of two milking cows. The aim of the project is to improve the living conditions of two marsh lane Saddat families (22 people in total) by giving each family a cow. The families can then sell the milk produced by the cow and generate enough income to meet their daily needs. The marsh lane families much appreciated the project and wish to convey their thanks to both The Lady Fatemah (a.s.) Charitable Trust and the IRAC for their fruitful work. They also expressed a desire for more cows to be purchased in order to improve the living condition of more marsh lane families.

Somalia – The Forgotten Muslim Land
2006-02-20
Severe drought and famine continues to savage Somalia, Kenya, Ethiopia and Djibouti, with people just collapsing and dying. As the temperatures sore to over 40 degree centigrade (104 Fahrenheit), millions of peoples’ lives are threatened through dehydration, and drought related starvation. Severe water shortages in these east African countries have forced many to drink their own urine, whilst others walk upto 70 kilometers (45 miles) to get tiny amounts of water, one-twentieth of the daily amount recommended by minimum humanitarian standards.

Pakistan – Kashmir Earthquake Appeal
2005-10-16
Pakistan – Kashmir Earthquake Appeal "And whoever saved a life, it would be as if he saved the life of the entire people." (Holy Qur’an, 5:35) On the 8th of October 2005, a devastating earthquake (depth 10km) hit Southeast Asia, with its centre in Muzaffarabad, 95km northeast of Islamabad. The worst affected areas were within a 100km radius of the epicentre, around Kashmir. In Pakistan, the latest death toll estimates from DFID suggest 25,000 with 63,000 injured. At least 2 schools collapsed with 400 children buried. In India official reports estimate 1,300 dead and 4,500 injured. Approximately 4 million people have been rendered homeless, thousands are missing, and as aftershocks continue and weather conditions worsen, this figure will inevitably rise.

Medical Referral Program
2005-09-12
IRAC’s Medical Referral Program There are a number of Afghani and Iraqi refugees in Iran who require routine medical care, outpatient treatments etc, amounting to on average, £50 per patient. Their reason for not repatriating is lack of medical facilities in their respective countries, and so they remain in Iran hoping somehow to raise the money for treatment. In addition, a growing number of Iraqi and Afghani nationals are coming to Iran, seeking more complicated treatments including open heart surgery, chemotherapy, radiotherapy and eye surgery. The IRAC office in Tehran is co-coordinating this work.
