The unending misery of victims of recent floods continues to take its toll across Pakistan. As part of our emergency response, MICT has so far targeted Mianwali, Layyah, Muzaffar Garh, Dera Ghazi Khan, Rajan pur and Dera Ismail Khan, where thousands of families are stranded under the open sky. Through our intervention, MICT has distributed urgently needed food to members of more than 1,000 families. But this is clearly not enough.
This has been the heaviest rainfall since the deluge of 1929. Thousands of homes have been leveled, infrastructure (bridges roads etc.) & businesses washed away, livestock drowned and crops ruined. 14 million people have been affected half of them being children The death toll from the country’s worst floods in living memory topped 1,800 as outbreak of water-borne disease emerged and penniless survivors sought refuge from the raging torrents. The devastating flood, which has played havoc with human life and property, has also inflicted a colossal $1 billion loss to agriculture in the Punjab and Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa alone. Losses to roads, bridges, housing, livestock and property are additional. The UN estimates losses ranging in billions of dollars.
The rapidly escalating catastrophe unleashed by the ongoing monsoon rains and floods in Pakistan once again puts numerous lives at stake in a country which has seen repeated calamities in recent years. The final toll from this latest natural disaster is yet to unfold. The Pakistan government estimates that anywhere up to 14 million people or more which is roughly equivalent to half of Afghanistan’s entire population, could eventually be displaced. At MICT, we are launching this appeal though LFT for immediate assistance to undertake badly needed relief work.

Like in many developing countries, the unemployment rate in Pakistan is high. The website index mundi estimates that 15.2 percent of the workforce will be unemployed during 2010. This means that out of every seven persons, one person is unemployed. Unemployment not only condemns families to a life in poverty, it also causes many social problems. Unemployed persons may turn to unlawful ways to earn money out of desperation, they may turn to drugs in order to relieve the unbearable stress they are under, they may turn to domestic violence because they feel unable to cope with their family obligations.

Bibi Sakina (AS) Water Supply Project - For Water Scarcity Areas of Islamabad and Surrounding Districts
2008-11-11
Pakistan is a country where water is a scarce commodity. Recent surveys commissioned by various international agencies and the Pakistani Government have concluded that the deserts of Sindh and Balochistan, and dry areas of Pakistan in high altitudes do not have enough safe, clean, drinkable water to sustain their populations. The ferocity of the problem increases every year as the underground water levels recede; predominantly due to the effects of climate change – increasing global temperatures are evaporating reserves quicker than before, and less rainfall means water resources are drying out in the long term.
95 Cataract Patients treated in Kashmir and Pakistan during June 2007
2007-07-15
One of the greatest bounties Allah gave to man is the bounty of vision. Vision enables us to perceive the world around us. In numerous verses, the holy Koran refers to vision and to light, as opposed to blindness and darkness. Vision and light enable us to perceive reality and distinguish truth from falsehood, while blindness and darkness make us helpless and unable to perceive. LRBT FREE Eye Care {The Graham Layton Trust} was founded to combat blindness and restore the eyesight of persons suffering from blindness due to treatable causes, but who cannot obtain treatment due to poverty. LRBT’s hospitals in Mansehra and Mandra, are located in Kashmir perform cataract surgery with modern methods, including implantation of intra-ocular lenses, completely free of charge.
Pakistan – Kashmir Earthquake Appeal
2005-10-16
Pakistan – Kashmir Earthquake Appeal "And whoever saved a life, it would be as if he saved the life of the entire people." (Holy Qur’an, 5:35) On the 8th of October 2005, a devastating earthquake (depth 10km) hit Southeast Asia, with its centre in Muzaffarabad, 95km northeast of Islamabad. The worst affected areas were within a 100km radius of the epicentre, around Kashmir. In Pakistan, the latest death toll estimates from DFID suggest 25,000 with 63,000 injured. At least 2 schools collapsed with 400 children buried. In India official reports estimate 1,300 dead and 4,500 injured. Approximately 4 million people have been rendered homeless, thousands are missing, and as aftershocks continue and weather conditions worsen, this figure will inevitably rise.
