Homes for Orphans, Poor & Elderly in Bangladesh
Thousands in Bangladesh live in the direst of circumstances in the remotest of areas and go unnoticed. Widows with their young are often taking shelter in makeshift homes, often on the roadsides, without access to water and sanitation. The result – disease and death.
The cost of construction for a basic home can be as little as a few hundred pounds which will provide a tin-shed home, which will provide temporary shelter. But is this the answer? Bangladesh has been the unfortunate victim of numerous natural calamities which have resulted in thousands of lives being lost. Based on the latest Germanwatch report just released in mid-December 2009, Bangladesh was the country most affected by extreme weather events from 1990 to 2008. Climate change is an increasingly important factor for the occurrence and intensity of these extreme weather events.
Over 100 years has passed since the last major earthquake in 1896 that shook Bangladesh, it is predicted that an earthquake of similar magnitude is imminent in the next decade.
ProjectHOPE seeks to construct homes for the poorest of families in rural areas to build homes that will withstand potential flood and earthquake damage, thereby minimising the potential loss of lives.
