Appeal for Nutrition and Community Program for Unaccompanied Elderly Iraqi Refugees Sultaniyeh Refugee Camp – Zanjan Province – Iran

Dear LFT donors: It costs a mere 42 GBP to provide an elderly refugee with three nutritious meals for a month. Please, continue to donate and gain the thawab of honouring the elderly.

The Holy Prophet (pbuh) said:

Those who do not show mercy to our young ones and do not realize the right of our elders are not from us

(Narrated Abdullah ibn Amr ibn al-'As - Sunan Abu Dawud).

In 2006, LFT and IRAC joined hands to care for then eleven unaccompanied elderly and chronically ill refugees living in Sultaniyeh Refugee Camp near the city of Zanjan/Iran.  Two of the refugees have since passed away, while two others left the program.

Although IRAC’s program is very small, it is unique in the way it involves the community in caring for the elderly refugees. Encouraged by IRAC’s financial support, many camp residents take part. As the elderly refugees live in separate houses, wishing to preserve the independence they came to cherish in younger days, each refugee’s neighbour performs daily tasks, like helping the refugee to use the bathroom, take a shower or change his clothes. IRAC’s representative prepares and distributes the three daily meals. While nothing can replace the loving care of children, IRAC’s program enables these refugees to age in dignity.
