Iraq's Orphans and Widows of War

The Holy Prophet (saw) said:

“He who maintains an orphan in honour, he and I will be together in heaven…as these two fingers are together.”

As Iraq emerges from a nine year invasion of US forces, it faces an uphill battle to help the poor, the wounded, the widowed and others scarred by war. Tens of thousands of civilians have died and the most vulnerable of all are the orphans of Iraq.

The Iraqi Ministry of Labour and Social Affairs released a report estimating that there were 5 million Iraqi orphans, with over 500,000 living on the streets without any home or family care.  Those who do have a family are forced to leave their schools and go to work to help out with finance; a situation that has affected them mentally. The report further said there were only 459 orphans in government orphanages while there were 800 Iraqi orphans in American Iraqi prisons.

It is not a shame being an orphan as Allah the most merciful is always there to care and provide for them, but it is a test on us as a Muslim society to see how we deal with this deplorable situation and to what extend are we willing to sacrifice ourselves to help solve this problems. No matter how much help the orphans receive from the various charity organizations, for those who have lost one or both parents, no help can replace the stability, love and affection provide by the parents.
