Understanding Khums

Khums means ‘a fifth’ (or 20 per cent) in Arabic and refers to an obligatory Islamic tax on some items that we own under specific conditions.

We pay this tax because the Qur’an says (8:41)

“Know that whatever of a thing you acquire, a fifth of it is for Allah, for the Messenger, for the near relative, and the orphans, the needy, and the wayfarer.”

Khums is divided into two parts: Sehme Imam and Sehme Sadaat. The Sehme Imam portion of Khums is allocated to projects endorsed by Maraja, while the Sehme Saadat portion is allocated to Sadaat (descendants of the Prophet Muhammad (SAW)) in need.
