Grant of a Hip Pump for manual irrigation to five poor families in two villages in Karbala Province, Iraq

God says in Holy Quran:
“What good you do, Allah is conversant with.”
During the current conditions of long-term drought in Iraq, agriculture is faced with difficulties and has almost come to a standstill in many regions. Without rain, and in the absence of irrigation systems, farmers are forced to irrigate their land by hand using well water. Kerosene-powered mechanical pumps are used to draw the water. The pumps are heavy and difficult to operate and maintenance is costly and cumbersome. Kerosene is expensive and eats up a large chunk of the farmers’ income.

When economic difficulties – be they caused by internal problems or an international situation - strike a country, the poor and deprived strata of society are always the ones that suffer most. This is also true with regard to the situation of Iraqi and Afghan refugees in Iran. Economic strain causes the Iranian government to cut subsidies and make them available only to Iranian nationals. The cost of diagnostic testing and medical treatment is rising. Even many Iranian patients, who are generally covered by health insurance, have difficulties to afford their share of the cost. As of 1 July 2012, refugees in Iran are not allowed to benefit from health insurance schemes, regardless of their health status. At the same time, hospitals are allowed to charge higher amounts for the treatment of non-Iranians.
