Akili Timamu Elimu Bora (ATEB)

Teachers frequently experience stress, burnout and emotional fatigue, with limited training to protect their own wellbeing. At The Lady Fatemah Trust, we believe every teacher deserves support — and when teachers are equipped, they can better support their students. Building on Pamoja Afya Bora, we were invited by Zanzibar’s Ministry of Education to develop ATEB, training teachers and leaders in mental health awareness. Since 2025, hundreds have taken part with a three-year extension now underway in Zanzibar’s schools.

Mental Health Principles

ATEB strengthens mental health training directly within the education sector. Master Trainers are supported first, who support programme delivery, mentoring and quality assurance. They are supported to mentor others with care and consistency. Head Teachers then receive leadership training so they can gently champion mental health within their schools, before sharing practical, school-based sessions with their teaching staff. Sessions cover mental health awareness, stress management, emotional regulation, safeguarding, stigma reduction and referral pathways — supported by facilitator guides, toolkits and ongoing mentoring, so learning stays embedded long after training ends.

Confidence in the Classroom

Facilitators shared how warmly teachers engaged throughout the pilot, taking part in open discussions and growing in confidence as they learned to recognise and respond to emotional distress with care. Many asked for longer or additional sessions — a gentle reminder that this support is not just needed, but genuinely welcomed.

The Work Ahead

Following a heartening pilot, ATEB has entered a three-year journey (2026–2029). Working in continued partnership with the Ministry of Education, the project hopes to reach 9,000 teachers, 243 Head Teachers and 217 secondary schools — gently strengthening safeguarding, easing stigma and nurturing sustainable mental health support across Zanzibar’s education sector.
