Pamoja Afya Bora

Pamoja Afya Bora, meaning “Better Wellbeing Together”, is Lady Fatemah Trust’s overarching mental health framework for Zanzibar. Many communities lack access to culturally appropriate mental health support, leaving stigma and silence unchallenged. Since 2023, working in partnership with the Ministry of Health, we’ve trained local facilitators to deliver mental health education across Unguja and Pemba — reaching even the most remote communities. Our locally-led approach works through collaborations with community groups, schools, health facilities, workplaces, faith settings and other local organisations.

Internationally Recognised
Mental Health Principles

Pamoja Afya Bora is grounded in internationally recognised Mental Health First Aid principles, adapted specifically for Zanzibar’s context. Since 2023, in partnership with the Ministry of Health, we’ve trained local facilitators to deliver culturally adapted Kiswahili education across Unguja and Pemba — reaching even the most remote communities. Ongoing mentoring and refresher training keep this work sustainable, embedded and truly community-owned. Once trained, facilitators deliver interactive sessions using a Kiswahili curriculum covering understanding mental health, stress and stigma, coping strategies, and encouraging appropriate help-seeking. Ongoing mentoring and refresher training strengthen programme quality, ensuring support becomes embedded, sustainable and truly community-owned across Zanzibar.

Creating Safe Spaces Across Zanzibar

Since 2023, facilitators have delivered over 1,800 community sessions, reaching more than 44,000 people directly. Nearly 90% now feel more confident talking about mental health, and 80% report reduced stigma — proof that community-led education is changing how Zanzibar understands and responds to mental health.

Most beneficiaries say it’s far easier to talk about mental health now than just a few years ago; with family, and across community spaces.

Mental health is increasingly openly discussed in families, schools and communities. What was once a taboo subject is now part of everyday conversation.
